Set a purpose for reading

  • Have students do a picture walk through the issue. Then read and discuss the cover. Have any students ever tried snowboarding? What can they share about winter sports?
  • Before turning to page 2, say, “As we read the article, think about how Chloe became one of the best snowboarders.”
  • Read each box, stopping at the end of the box to discuss and check for comprehension.
  • Help students review each thing Chloe had to do to become among the best at her sport. Then have students share words that describe Chloe. Record their responses.
  • Complete the page 4 activity as a group or individually.

Deepen students’ learning with any of these supplemental activities:

Play the online game: Ready, Set, Snow!

(skill: capitalization)

Complete a hands-on activity: Snowboard Craft

Kids reflect on how Chloe became one of the best snowboarders and imagine what they would look like on a skateboard! (skills: fine-motor, writing)
