Set a purpose for reading

  • Have students do a picture walk through the issue. Then read and discuss the cover. Have any students ever made a gingerbread cookie? What can they share about it?
  • Before turning to page 2, say, “As we read the article, think about each step it takes to make a gingerbread cookie.”
  • Read each box, stopping at the end of the box to check for comprehension.
  • Have students follow along the text by acting out each step with their hands. On the second read, you can provide play dough for students to act out the steps.
  • Complete the page 4 activity as a group or individually.
  • When you’re done, do the Dance Break!
