Build background knowledge by watching “Hooray for Thanksgiving!” When you’re done watching, ask the following question: What is your family’s Thanksgiving tradition?

Set a purpose for reading

  • Have students do a picture walk through the issue, then read and discuss the cover. What is the kid on the cover doing? Do any students like to help in the kitchen? What other ways do kids help at home?
  • Then, before turning to page 2, say, “As we read the article, think about whether you like to help in the same way as the kids in each box.”
  • As you read, pause after each box. Give volunteers the opportunity to share whether or not it is their favorite way to help.
  • Complete the page 4 activity as a group or individually.
  • When you're done, do the Dance Break!
